??? what? those movies are not underrated, if anything only The Secret of NIMH deserves to be here!

All the others are classics, with probably the exception being TMNT which is more of a cult classic, for real, it makes me wonder, if this were a top 6 you probably would have put Atlantis: The Lost Empire here.

outside of the animation bubble, black cauldron is not considered a classic... nor is treasure planet. whether it failed at the box office, was passed over critically (hence posting the metrics I did), or just buried in history by other films (like secret of nimh) - these all qualify as underrated. did you read the post and disagree with what I said? or did you look at the films and disagree with the choices themselves because I think I made my case well enough in the content of the post. thanks for the comment!

Nice list although I think that the true underrated gems are foreign animated films that had international releases like Persepolis and Triplets of Belleville. Also I agree with you on The Iron Giants, great film but poorly handled release date/ marketing.

Thanks for the comment! So the metrics I used to define if a film was "underrated" vs just "forgotten" or a "box office bomb" was the production budget, total domestic gross, and the rotten tomatoes rating. The idea being that if a film is great (meaning a modern classic or cult film with a rabid supportive fan base for good reason) but didn't make it's budget back and/or wasn't received well by critics -- I decided that was underrated.

THEN I picked the movies I liked the most AND had an interesting story behind why they were slated in the "underrated" category in the first place.

So for the metrics, Persepolis didn't make it's budget back domestically (did worldwide, but a lot of films do) but has a high critic rating and was nominated for a best animated film oscar. It's also passed over by the movie watching public in general but has a strong 'modern classic' stature. So that would fit.

Triplets of Belleville on the other hand did well at the box office, critically well received, and was nominated for 2 oscars. It doesn't have the reach that huge company films do but I would put that more in the "forgotten" category than "underrated."

Again, thanks for the comment! I kind of want to go watch those movies again today during work so thanks for the inspiration (=
