Good informations!
Thank you!
Wow, what a very linkable reference, one I should've had ages ago! I'm glad you started with copyrights after cartoons (previous top 5 blog).. the 2 that stick in my craw are: Liberty's Kids (PBS toon) and Shaolin Showdown (and it's sequel series about Raymundo). The former was lifted from a post-Revolutionary war compilation book, the latter lifted from a Chinese>English compilation book, both are past their copyright protections... no credit was ever given to the authors of these great books |:
The PBS production I can forgive, but the commercial one, no. It was written by a Chinese man before the turn of the 20th century, and predicted cellphones, airplanes and globalization well before his other contemporary sci-fi buddy's in the West did. Also a zinger of a storyline. Can only hope he's somehow related to the Chinese chick who ganked his material, again, unreferenced, no royalties or points paid :p
Yea I don't like it when credit isn't given even if something is in the public domain. It's more of an ethics issue than a legal one but still, you're right, it feels gross. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad it helped! Feel free to link it all over the place (=
Thanks for sharing this -- it's useful, to-the-point information and creators on Newgrounds should really take a gander at it.
For a website and community that utilizes a lot of material from other creators, I think it would be great if info on copyright laws/parodies/fair use was more accessible to everyone... especially for younger people who begin participating on here and may not 'know better.'
That's something that I found strange when researching all this was not just how little accessible information there was out there for artists, but how much mis-information was out there too! I hope that artists will feel more comfortable after reading this in the ways they are and aren't protected. It's tough to know that you're taking a risk if you don't know what the actual risk is. Thanks for the comment and the follow!
